Phonemic Awareness

PHONEMIC AWARENESS:
A pre-reading skill; manipulating sounds.

Isolation: recognize individual sounds in words
Example: What is the first sound in cat? (/c/)

Substitution: substitute a phoneme for another
Example: Say cat.  Now change the /c/ to /h/ (Now you have hat)

Segmenting: segment or separate the sounds
Example: Say all of the sounds in cat. (/c/-/a/-/t/)

Blending: blending individual sounds together.
Ex: The teacher says (/c/-/a/-/t/).  The teacher then asks the person to blend the sounds together. (cat)

Deletion: deleting a sound.
Example: Say cat.  Now say cat without the /c/. (at)

EXAMPLE OF GROUP PHONEMIC AWARENESS ACTIVITY:
Phonemic Awareness Concept: "Substitution".
The teacher chooses one letter to put in the blanks.  Example: /b/
I love to eat bapples.
Their buicy and bweet.
The one thing I don't know
is which one to eat.
