Pocket Chart

**POCKET CHART**

The pocket chart will usually have the same words as the easy reader book box books.

It is a way for the whole class to see the words easily.

The pocket chart will be available for students to read on their own during literacy centers as they

"Read Around the Room".

Philosophy on Teaching Preschool

Play and language are the most important tools for literacy learning. It is essential to have a strong, literacy-rich Pre-K class that is a joyful, busy place where children, through play, develop relationships, explore, learn and create. Every activity throughout the day needs to be infused with literacy. Songs, rhymes, chants, books, poems, finger plays, reading, writing, and talking are all a part of play and language.

I do not believe in a "letter of the week." By doing this many children work on letters they already know and other children forget last week's letter while working on this week's letter because they are looking at one letter at a time. I will be teaching themes where all day children are engaged with letters, to learn how to look at them, write them, play with them, and put them together to make words at the same time. The more connections children make between the multiple understanding required to read, the faster they learn . A wide variety of authentic literacy experiences need to take place at once.

A Pre-K class should be a community where all children consider and contribute to one another's well being and learning.
